David Knight

Overview
Whilst David's paintings are abstract in nature they are grounded and informed by the dynamic coastal landscape, its tidal energy, its movement, the changing light, wind and the weather, coastal textures and colour are all fundamental elements incorporated within the language of these paintings.
Whilst walking, David is constantly looking and observing the surrounding landscape, this is the most important source of information for his work. In his studio he is encouraging the unconscious, the emotionally observed ‘soaked up’ landscape, becomes a vital part of the intuitive painting process.
Sound is also important, he believes observation and sound are inseperable, feeling the paintings are very sonorous - describing his paintings as musical analogies. Linear abstract rhythms, suggesting the constant energy and movement of the sea or the flowing tidal water which can often form an underlying structure to his paintings.
Running drips of paint echo rain being blown, and rich layers of washed paint form areas of constantly changing light, across the surface of his painting. Collage paper edges encourage paint to run and pool like water might behave across the beach. All these elements incorporated within his paintings are suggestions, glimpses, borrowed momentary aspects of the coastal landscape.
